Polish, Greek leaders educate Asian delegation

12/5/2006 - Polish, Greek leaders educate Asian delegation

(Chicago)—Chris Karabis, representing the office of Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, along with staff from other state constitutional offices, hosted a delegation of two dozen Chinese nationals from the province of Inner Mongolia on Dec. 1 at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago.

Providing an overview of their respective offices were Rajinder Bedi, Managing Director, Office of Trade & Investments and representing the Governor’s Office; Elizabeth Austin, Communications Director, Office of Lt. Governor Pat Quinn; Agnes Ptasznik, Assistant to Attorney General Lisa Madigan for Eastern European Affairs; Vittorio M. Gomez, Deputy Director, Taxpayer Information and Consumer Affairs, Office of Comptroller Dan Hynes, and Michael Smith, also of the State Treasurer’s Office.

“Although we may be from different parts of the world, we all share similar objectives,” Karabis said. “By providing a safe living environment, economic opportunities, and a prosperous future for our citizens, the state of Illinois is rich in the array of services and programs that it has to offer.”

The province of Inner Mongolia is situated on China's northern frontier, and like Illinois, eagerly explores potential business opportunities to improve its economy.

“It is fitting that this group study the city of Chicago, an international business hub, and the state of Illinois, which has had much success in establishing cooperative international programs,” said Professor Harry Lepinske, Chairman, Central Asian Productivity Research Center and group leader. “We truly appreciate all the effort that allowed this event to take place. Opportunities abound to enhance future mutually beneficial economic relationships.”

Alexi Giannoulias will be sworn into the Illinois State Treasurer's post on January 8, 2007.

Participants in the state government leadership study group, organized by the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office, gathered for a group photo at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago on Dec. 1.
