Founded in 1935 and opened to the public in 1937, the Museum offers exhibits of the art, history and culture of Poland and of the Polish-American Community. Special exhibits showcase significant examples of Polish art and culture.
Among the permanent displays is the huge painting of Casimir Pulaski at the Revolutionary War Battle of Savannah and a thirty foot high stained glass 'window' from the 1939 World's Fair. There are also displays of Polish folk costumes and Polish folk arts and crafts.
In a special room of the Museum you can view momentos of Ignacy Paderewski, Polish pianist, patriot and statesman. The display includes all the furnishings of his last apartment.
A gift shop is in the Museum and offers an excellent selection of imported amber jewelry, crystal, dolls, books, tapes and many other items.
The Polish Museum of America Library is also housed in the same building. This Library, established in 1913, contains over 60,000 volumes and is open to the casual reader as well as the serious researcher. The Library also contains material useful in genealogical study. Please call the Museum for a description of the materials available and for opening and closing times.

| | The Polish Museum of America The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago The Joseph Conrad Yacht Club, Chicago are honored to request your presence at the opening of 1/29/2008 - JOSEPH CONRAD: ’Twixt Land and Sea
at The Polish Museum of America
Friday, February 1, 2008 at 7 p.m.
The M³ynek ensemble will perform a program of songs of the sea and shanties.
On Friday, February 1, 2008, at 7 p.m., The Polish Museum of America, in conjunction with the Consulate General of The Republic of Poland in Chicago and The Joseph Conrad Yacht Club, Chicago, will welcome the exhibit JOSEPH CONRAD: ’Twixt Land and Sea as it returns to Chicago following a brief display at the museum last year. UNESCO designated 2007 the Year of Joseph Conrad.
Organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature in Warsaw to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the writer’s birth, this traveling exhibit is a bilingual documentary presentation of the life, work, and influence of the sailor and writer Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski – Joseph Conrad. The exhibit comprises 25 documentary panels of text and images drawn from libraries, archives, and museums in the United States and Poland, assembled under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland.
The title of the exhibition – derived from a collection of Conrad's short stories ’Twixt Land and Sea (1912) – is meant to serve as a metaphor. However, it does not intend to refer only to the life choices of the writer and the places where his characters function. The title unlocks the space between land and the wide sea for dreams, feelings, moral choices, remembrances and – above all – art. Conrad will guide you through this realm with excerpts from his works and letters.
An exceptional highlight of the exhibition – included only at the Chicago venue – is a display of original ink drawings from the PMA collection by Feliks Topolski (1907–1989) of Conrad and motifs relating to his life. These sketches were commissioned ca. 1940 to illustrate the book, Conrad and His Contemporaries, written by Joseph H. Retinger (1888-1960), and published in London in 1941; the first American edition was printed in 1943. Copies of the book will be shown alongside the drawings. Topolski, a painter, caricaturist, and muralist, chronicled many of the twentieth century's most significant people and associated historical events. Like Conrad and Retinger, Topolski was born in Poland and lived in England his entire creative career.
JOSEPH CONRAD: ’Twixt Land and Sea is on view from February 1 through March 1.
School Groups are invited to schedule guided tours.
