| | DOONESBURY’S TRUDEAU NAMED “AUTHENTIC BIGOT” 6/26/2006 - DOONESBURY’S TRUDEAU NAMED “AUTHENTIC BIGOT”
Artist Garry Trudeau, creator of the Doonesbury comic strip, has
been certified as an “Authentic Bigot” by the Anti-Bigotry
Committee of the Polish American Congress in New York.
This special designation is bestowed on individuals in public
life, usually the media, who promote ethnic prejudice as an
acceptable norm for American society. The last recipient
was comedian Jackie Mason who repeatedly degraded Polish
Americans with his special kind of ethnic insults.
What irked the Polish Americans was a recent Doonesbury
comic strip which Trudeau drew about a graduation
ceremony. He then demeaned Polish Americans by giving the
name “Kaminski” to one of his Doonesbury characters who
graduates by overcoming “the worst skill deficiencies in
reaching the minimum threshold of achievement.”
“To target our ethnic group with such a derogatory description
is just plain bigotry,” the Anti-Bigotry Committee told Chris
Pizey, President and CEO of UClick.com which syndicates
the Doonesbury comics.
Noting that children and young adults are likely to represent
the majority of his readership, the anti-bias group admonished
Pizey that Trudeau “has given them his encouragement to
accept such prejudice in their own relationships.
“His most ardent fan undoubtedly is the schoolyard bully,
grateful to Mr. Trudeau for providing him with some new
ammunition to now go out and taunt and harass any Polish
kid in his neighborhood.”
In addition, Pizey was asked to present the committee’s
“Certificate of Authenticity” to Trudeau classifying him
as an “Authentic Bigot” for “promoting and encouraging
the idea of prejudice among America’s youth.”
