| Loyola University Chicago is offering a 3-hour college credit course in Krakow 2/23/2005 - Loyola University Chicago is offering a 3-hour college credit course in Krakow, Poland entitled CONTEMPORARY POLISH LITERATURE: MYTH, MEMORY AND HISTORY. The dates of the program are May 23 to June 17. Students will be housed in academic dormitories at the Jagiellonian University. Applications until March 15.
The summer course will focus on three main things: 1) studying and discussing the best of current Polish literature and culture, 2) experiencing the still ongoing transformation of Polish culture from its long years under communism into a new, more democratic era, and 3) searching the present culture to find Poland’s roots in its historical experience. All of this will take place in Krakow, Poland’s ancient capital and still a dynamic center, and in visits to nearby sites of cultural and historical significance.
The program is designed to deepen one’s understanding of the Polish perspective on its own history, literature, economics and social life. The books we will read are meant to draw us into the modern experience of Polish life, which means to understand and appreciate the historical experiences of Poland through the 20th century and into the 21st.
One highlight of the program is the opportunity to share and discuss one’s insights and observations with other college students. In these encounters, the range of experience and insight are multiplied many times over. Students will keep a photographic journal linking past, present and future Poland in each their own personal way, and will share this journal with other members of the program.
