DR. JAN MOOR-JANKOWSKI, POLISH UNDERGROUND VETERAN AND PATRIOT, DIED IN NEW YORK

9/2/2005 - Dr. Jan Moor-Jankowski, retired professor of forensic medicine at New York University's School of Medicine and consultant to the Holocaust Documentation Committee of the Polish American Congress, died
August 27th in New York City where he lived. He was 81. Dr. Moor-Jankowski took the bullet when he tried to cross enemy lines to rescue a 16-year-old Jewish girl in hiding. He had sworn to her parents, dear
friends of his, that he would protect her during the hostilities. He did and she survived the war. Because of his fluency in German, the Armia Krajowa
provided him with false documentation which allowed him to pose as a German military official and gather intelligence information valuable to the underground.
His disguise helped him rescue and return to Poland many Poles who had been sent to Germany to provide forced labor for the Germans. Conversely, he was
able to transport Jews from Poland to Berlin where they found it easier to hide and where their Yiddish accent was not as noticeable.
After the war, Dr. Moor-Jankowski completed his medical studies in Switzerland and became a research professor
at Geneva University and Cambridge in Great Britain . He came to the United States in 1962 at the invitation of the
National Institute of Health where he would spend the next 30 years as research professor at NYU.
