61 YEARS AGO THEY WERE FIGHTING THE NAZIS IN THE SEWERS OF WARSAW 9/18/2005 - Commemorating the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising of August, 1944 were six survivors of that bloody battle between the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) and the German occupiers. Shown in the photo are A.K. veterans (from left to right) Jerzy Waleskowski, Wanda Lorenc, Ordon Wos,
Michael Madejski and Wladyslaw Mazur.
They participated in a memorial mass held at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Church in New York City on Sunday, August 7th marking this heroic, but tragic, event in World War II. Currently president of the A.K. Veterans Association of New York, Michael Madejski was only a youngster
when the Uprising took place. At the time, he was a member of the scout troop Zoska which liberated 350 Jews from a German concentration camp in the middle of Warsaw. Israel's Yad Vashem honors
Madejski's troop for this courageous and selfless act. Also honored at Yad Vashem is another Polish underground organization, Zegota which dedicated itself to saving Jews during the German occupation.
Established and financed by Poland's wartime government-in-exile in London, Zegota was the only one of its kind anywhere in German-occupied Europe. What troubles Madejski so much these days is what
he says are the "many misrepresentations which still continue about Poland and the Polish people. Many of them started when we were under German and
Soviet occupation and control."
Madejski faults the media for most of them. "It's as if they're willing to believe the worst kind of propaganda the Nazis and Communists ever fabricated about us."
200,000 Poles were killed during the Warsaw Uprising. It is often confused with the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising that took place a year earlier in April, 1943 when 20,000
Jews perished.
