OPENING PROGRAM
Jazz Interpretation of Music by Polish Composers (Jazzowe interpretacje muzyki kompozytorów polskich)
Ludomir Marcin Januszkiewicz and his band, The Chicago Coalition Quintet, will present a jazz interpretation of Chopin’s music as well as contemporary Polish composers including Bronislaw Kaper, Wlodzimierz Nahorny and Marcin Januszkiewicz.
The band includes Charles Broughan on drums, Jim Cox on bass, Jerry DiMuzio on tenor saxophone, Marcin Januszkiewicz on piano, and Ryan Shultz on trumpet. This program is co-sponsored by the Kosciuszko Foundation, Chicago Chapter.

Helena Modjeska (Modrzejewska). A Life in the Theater – Twice (a lecture by Jan Lorys). (Helena Modrzejewska: Kariera w teatrze polskim i amerykańskim).
This year marks the 97th anniversary of the death of famous Polish actress, Helena Modjeska. She was probably the best interpreter of Shakespeare in the 19th century, and premiered in many of Ibsen’s plays. She also spoke out on women’s issues at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exhibition in 1893 and argued for Polish independence.
Mr. Jan Lorys, director of the Polish Museum in America here in Chicago, will use as source material her speeches, memoirs, and reminisces of her contemporaries, as well as interpretations of Modjeska’s life by the famous American author Susan Sontag (“In America”). Modjeska’s relationship to Chicago and its large Polish community will also be explored.

When God Looked the Other Way by Wesley Adamczyk (An Author Event).
(Gdy Bóg patrzył w inną stronę – Spotkanie z autorem, Wiesławem Adamczykiem)
Wesley Adamczyk will discuss his family’s deportation to Siberia by the Soviets during World War II, their survival under inhuman conditions, and eventual escape. The saga continues as the children’s mother perishes from exhaustion while leading them to freedom, and with their discovery that their father has been murdered by the Soviets during the Katyn Massacre of Polish officers in 1940. The orphans’ decade-long nomadic journey through twelve countries and four continents ends with their arrival on the shores of freedom in the United States of America. The search for their father’s grave continued until the Soviets revealed the location of the mass graves containing the remains of the Katyn victims five decades after the murder.
When God Looked the Other Way was published by the University of Chicago Press and chosen by the Chicago Tribune as one of the best nonfiction books of 2004.

Grazyna Bazylewski, a Chicago born Polish American folk artist, will demonstrate the Polish folk art of “wycinanki”. Adults and children can learn to design and create traditional and their own “wycinanki”. Supplies will be provided by the presenter.

Fisherman’s Banners and Ribands (Wstęgi i transparenty kaszubskie)
Come and learn how to make beautiful Kashubian ribands and banners with craft instructor Lidia Walters and share the beauty of the Baltic Sea. The custom of greeting fishermen returning from the sea or leaving for their first fishing season is a shared custom known in many cultures throughout the world. People of Kashuby in northern Poland walk to the seashore holding colorful banners and ribands symbolizing the fruitful sea hunt. You’ll enjoy making this simple paper craft. All materials will be provided by the presenter.

Miniature Bethlehem Houses (crèches) – Polish Style (Szopki betlejemskie w polskim stylu)
Chicago artist, Stefan Niedorezo, will demonstrate folk art techniques in creating crèches using such materials as wood, straw, sticks, cotton and linen. All materials will be provided by the presenter. Mr. Niedorezo’s art works are displayed throughout the Chicago area and also in southern Poland (Tarnow and Krakow).
Age 12 and up. Registration is required - limit 15 people.
