Founded in 1935 and opened to the public in 1937, the Museum offers exhibits of the art, history and culture of Poland and of the Polish-American Community. Special exhibits showcase significant examples of Polish art and culture.
Among the permanent displays is the huge painting of Casimir Pulaski at the Revolutionary War Battle of Savannah and a thirty foot high stained glass 'window' from the 1939 World's Fair. There are also displays of Polish folk costumes and Polish folk arts and crafts.
In a special room of the Museum you can view momentos of Ignacy Paderewski, Polish pianist, patriot and statesman. The display includes all the furnishings of his last apartment.
A gift shop is in the Museum and offers an excellent selection of imported amber jewelry, crystal, dolls, books, tapes and many other items.
The Polish Museum of America Library is also housed in the same building. This Library, established in 1913, contains over 60,000 volumes and is open to the casual reader as well as the serious researcher. The Library also contains material useful in genealogical study. | | FESTIVAL OF MAPS - CHICAGO Maps and Panoramas of Warsaw November 2, 2007 – January 13, 2008 11/2/2007 - The Festival of Maps Chicago is a citywide celebration that joins over 30 cultural and scientific institutions in a unique collaboration to display humanity’s greatest discoveries and the maps that record our wayfinding from ancient to modern times. The Polish Museum of America, as an integral part of the cultural landscape of the city, was invited to participate in this event. Coincidentally, The Historical Museum of Warsaw (Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Stołecznego Warszawy) has just completed an exhibition devoted to Warsaw cartography.
Since Warsaw is Chicago’s first Sister City, the exhibition at the PMA concentrates on the period when both cities were in existence (roughly 1830 to the present). The existence of both cities was influenced by geographical realities and political events. While Chicago’s early growth was spurred by the Civil War – it became a supply center for the Union war effort in the West – Chicago never was the scene of a battle. Warsaw, to its great misfortune, is probably the most fought over city of the 20th century – finally becoming obliterated in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and its aftermath, and subsequently rebuilt at great cost.
The documentary display on loan from Warsaw includes photographic panoramas and depictions of important buildings, which illustrate the changing architectural styles in the city. Displayed alongside is a selection from the permanent collection of the Polish Museum of America of antique maps of Poland, Warsaw, and the surrounding region.
Special guests at the opening are Joanna Bojarska, Director of The Historical Museum of Warsaw and, Anna Kotańska, director of the Department of Iconography.
The opening of the exhibit will be held on Friday, November 2 at 7: 00 PM in the Great Hall of The Polish Museum of America, 984 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago.
